North Hatley is a charming heritage and vacation village where tourists like to stop along their journey. This village, first inhabited by Anglo-Saxons at the beginning of the 19th century, it was founded in 1897. Throughout the years, and under Anglophone domination (English-speaking), the village quickly became a dream vacation area for rich Americans. The railroad coming from the United States, which passed near the village, was certainly the main reason of that! And that’s without talking about the beautiful landscape that offered - and still offers - lac Massawippi...
Throughout the years, drawn by the bucolic landscape of the area, a large number of artists came settle in the village of North Hatley. Poets, sculptors, potters and writers were only a few inhabitants of the village. Nowadays, their ancestors still inhabit the area; some work the land, others perpetuate the family traditions. Vacationers can also stroll along the streets and the boutiques, visit the antiques shops, or stop for a coffee or a snack. Tourism is the most prosperous industry of the village. And some bed & breakfasts, hotels and restaurants of the area enjoy a good reputation in the Canadian industry.
