The village of Stanstead, which is part of the Most Beautiful Villages of Quebec Association, comprises the ancient villages of Stanstead Plain, Rock Island and Beebe Plain. The Canada/USA border crosses the village, as well as several buildings and houses.
After it was created, the village of Stanstead was for a long time considered a smuggler haunt and did not enjoy a very good reputation. Luckily, the village underwent an economical boom and nowadays, visitors can still visit buildings of impressive architecture, like the Stanstead College, the former post office, the ancient Commerce Bank and the old train station.
Nowadays, Stanstead is still the Canadian capital of granite. During your visit, take the time to admire the churches of different denominations and use the cycle paths built on the ancient railroad, but be careful not to cross the border illegally!
