The first people to settle in the Memphremagog area were the Irish and the Loyalists at the end of the 18th century. The area was first known for its copper mines, sawmills and flour mills. The construction of the railroad drew people from the United States, who were looking for a peaceful place, which is still very popular nowadays.
In this area, you will find magnificent mountains and lakes, as well as a replica of the Boston Opera House, which is crossed in its middle by the the Canada/U.S. border. The artists perform on a stage in Canada, while the audience is seated in the United States! Nowadays, the area offers a variety of tourism products, with its health or interpretation centres, outdoor activities, ski resorts, and bike paths.
