The Asbestos area became a city in 1879, with the discovery of the mineral that gave the territory its name. The exploitation of this resource started in 1881, and nowadays, the mine is still the largest opencast mine in the world. Of course, in the old days, the construction of a railroad was much needed, and it brought more and more people to the region.
Nowadays, visitors can still admire the Victorian houses built at the time, as well as churches of all denominations, even Gothic churches! In Saint-Georges-de-Windsor, the Catholic church conceals statues representing each one of the 12 apostles.
