Coaticook is the name of the river that runs through the area. That name was once pronounced "Koatikeku", and means "river of the pinelands" in the Abenaki language. This area has first been renowned for its archaeological site that abounds with all kinds of information concerning the region. People successively built a one-room country school, a general store, a post office, a forge, a sawmill, a wood factory, and a dam.
As soon as 1852, the region expanded, thanks to the railroad and the railroad company. Farms can be found everywhere in the area, including a great number of milk farms, which made the Eastern Townships region so famous. Coaticook also conceals a few architectural gems, like the old train station and the Sisco Memorial Church.
